Ratings not so rosy for O’Donnell variety show

Posted by AhVa On December - 1 - 2008

A mere 5 million viewers tuned in Friday for the 8 p.m. bow of Rosie O’Donnell’s variety show, “Rosie Live,” on NBC. The show has been dropped from the network’s schedule.

Among those making appearances on the hourlong program — conceived as a throwback to such series as “The Carol Burnett Show” — were Alanis Morissette, Alec Baldwin, Clay Aiken, Ne-Yo and Liza Minnelli. It earned a 1.2 preliminary rating among adults 18-49.

During the weekend, O’Donnell, a former cohost of “The View,” wrote on her blog that the low ratings and bad reviews meant that NBC would not pick up the series. [via #]

Brooke Burke is ‘Dancing’ Champ!

Posted by AhVa On November - 27 - 2008

TV personality and model Brooke Burke was crowned season 7 champ last night on “Dancing with the Stars.” The 37-year-old mother of four was announced the winner after the judges scores were combined with viewer votes.

Professional partner and first time winner Derek Hough was in shock, saying, “I actually can’t believe it! I really can’t, I honestly can’t. The journey’s been so long. It’s been tough. It’s been wonderful. It’s been everything I could ever hope for. Wow. I can’t believe we actually did it, girl!”

Burke came in first place eight out of ten times, receiving a 10 from the judges 16 times this season. She was able to maintain an eight point lead over Super Bowl champ Warren Sapp. The former football star took second place with professional partner Kym Johnson. *N Sync’s Lance Bass landed in the third spot with partner Lacey Schwimmer.

Previous season 7 competitors included actor Cody Linley, Olympic sprinter Maurice Green, soap star Susan Lucci, Oscar-winner Cloris Leachman, chef Rocco DiSpirito, reality TV star Kim Kardashian, actor Ten McGinley, comedian Jeffrey Ross, volleyball star Misty May-Treanor and singer Toni Braxton.

Some of the contestants will hop on a tour bus for a 38-city “Dancing with the Stars” tour. The show kicks off December 17 in San Diego.

Dr Pepper and Rocker in a War of Hype

Posted by AhVa On November - 27 - 2008

It took Axl Rose 14 years to complete the latest Guns N’ Roses album. But it took his lawyers only two days to take Dr Pepper to task for not making good on a promise of free soda to “everyone in America” in celebration.

In March the manufacturer made headlines by saying it would give out cans of its 123-year-old soft drink if the album, “Chinese Democracy,” came out by the end of the year. That was by no means a sure proposition, since Mr. Rose had failed to meet so many deadlines over the years that the album had become the music industry’s most notorious (and expensive) shaggy-dog story.

On Sunday the album was finally released, and Dr Pepper gave fans 24 hours to go to its Web site for a coupon redeemable for a can of soda; so many did that the site crashed, and the deadline was extended to Monday.

“We never thought this day would come,” said Tony Jacobs, a Dr Pepper marketing executive, in a statement last week.

The arrangement irked fans, who took to the Internet with stories of being blocked for hours from the site and a related customer-service phone line. And that irked Mr. Rose.

On Tuesday his lawyers sent a harshly worded letter to the soft drink maker complaining of its “appalling failure to make good on a promise it made to the American public,” and demanding a public apology, more time for thirsty fans, and payment for piggybacking on the “Chinese Democracy” publicity.

When asked about the letter, Dr Pepper said in a statement that the company took “great steps” to accommodate the online requests from consumers.

“This was one of the largest responses we have ever received for a giveaway,” the statement said, “and we’re happy we were able to satisfy the thirst of so many Dr Pepper fans.”

A spokesman said it was not known how many free sodas were given away on Sunday and Monday.

Mr. Rose’s representatives said that they tried to collaborate with Dr Pepper on the best way to distribute the soda, but that negotiations broke down.

“We had made an effort to turn this into a win-win-win — for the American public, Dr Pepper and Axl,” said Laurie Soriano, one of Mr. Rose’s lawyers. “But Dr Pepper’s view was just that Dr Pepper would win.”

The music industry had largely given up hope that “Chinese Democracy” would ever come out. Still, many assumed that if it ever was released it would likely be a gigantic seller. Guns N’ Roses, one of the most popular American bands of the last 30 years, has sold more than 40 million albums in the United States alone, according to the Recording Industry Association of America.

But anecdotal reports suggest that “Chinese Democracy,” which was released through an exclusive deal with the Best Buy chain, might not be the blockbuster the industry had hoped for. Sales figures will not be available until next week, but early estimates put the first-week total at 300,000 to 500,000 copies, a respectable but not extraordinary amount. Last week, for example, Beyoncé sold 482,000 copies of her latest record, “I Am … Sasha Fierce.”

The letter from Mr. Rose’s lawyers asks that Dr Pepper run apologetic full-page ads in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and other papers, giving customers more time to receive their free soda.

Similar sentiments spread across Guns N’ Roses message boards on Sunday.

“If they said they’d give a free can to everyone in America,” one fan wrote, “can they really put a one-day time limit on it? Seems like it’s something that if someone took to court they’d win.” [via #]

‘Twilight’: So how did you like it? [Behind The Scene]

Posted by AhVa On November - 26 - 2008

After what felt like an eternity-long wait (we feel your pain, Edward), we finally got to sink our teeth into the highly anticipated Twilight movie this weekend. So it’s about time we have a spoilerific discussion of one of the biggest films of the fall.

I’ve seen the vamp flick twice so far — once at a press screening and later during the midnight release — and I’m surprised by what a difference the audience can make. During the first show, with a crowd mostly made up of journalists and a few lucky fans who nabbed spare seats, the mood was fairly sedate. Sure, there were a few woots and hand claps when Robert Pattison first appeared on screen, but that was about it. I left the theater pretty jazzed about what I had just seen. But after attending Thursday’s midnight showing, where gaggles of girls giggled throughout the entire film — frequently during parts that weren’t intended to be funny — I felt slightly less enthused. Perhaps I’m easily influenced, or perhaps the movie doesn’t hold up to a second viewing, but after twirl No. 2 with Twilight, the movie seemed cheesier than I had remembered. That said, I do like the movie overall. But what about you? I’ll start our rehash with a few of my specific likes and dislikes, after the jump[Read more...]

Could the day after Thanksgiving be more bleak than black?

Posted by AhVa On November - 26 - 2008

Every year on Black Friday, stores extend their hours and offer “door-buster” specials on merchandise from TVs to apparel.

But amid a continued economic crisis — and after weeks of heavy markdowns and “early Black Friday” deals — consumers might opt to sleep in Friday rather than wait in line to shop.

A disappointing Black Friday would be a major blow to retailers that are counting on holiday sales to pull them out of a months-long sales slump. Analysts are predicting a spate of retail bankruptcy filings in January.

“Black Friday is everything to retailers,” said Britt Beemer, chairman of consumer behavior firm America’s Research Group. This year, “the entire future’s on the line.”

Tell us: Do you plan to shop on Black Friday this year?
